Statement of the Atlantic Council of Georgia on the Ongoing Large-Scale Russian Aggression Against Ukraine
We strongly condemn blatant military intervention of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. In the face of utterly unjust and barbaric Russian aggression, we express our full solidarity with the freedom-loving, courageous Ukrainian people and wish them victory in the ongoing struggle to defend their independence and territorial integrity.
Russia continues to violate the fundamental norms of international law and the borders and sovereignty of independent states.
To stop Putin’s inhumane, aggressive regime oriented on restoring the empire, it is necessary for the free world to unite and use all possible levers at its disposal.
In this fateful situation, for the long-term security of our country and its international reputation it is critical to stand on the right side of history and maintain a positional unity with the international community.
Unfortunately, the actions and statements of Prime Minister Gharibashvili, who does not consider the ongoing aggression in Ukraine a significant enough issue to be discussed at an emergency session of Georgian Parliament and is against joining the international sanctions imposed on Russia, violate this unity and damage Georgia’s international image. Given the apparent reality of Georgia-Ukraine security interdependence, this ‘my hut is on the edge’ position, based on erroneous logic that danger will pass me this way, does not serve the national interests of Georgia, nor does it reflect the position and mood of the majority of Georgians.
We would like to remind the Prime Minister that today the brave Ukrainians are fighting not only for the defense of their homeland, but also for the secure and peaceful future of Europe, of which Georgia is an integral part. It is also important to remind him that Ukraine has always provided military, political and humanitarian assistance to Georgia during both the Russian hybrid war of the 1990s and the Russian aggression of 2008.
Georgia has a moral obligation and it is in its strategic interest to provide maximum assistance to Ukraine in all possible directions in the fight against Russian aggression and occupation.
Based on the above, we call on the Prime Minister Gharibashvili and the Government of Georgia:
– To join all current and future sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom on Russia;
– To provide all necessary assistance to the State of Ukraine;
– To proactively support Ukrainian cause in multilateral and bilateral international formats;
– To proactively advocate for non-recognition policy in support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty;
– To shelter the citizens of Ukraine and provide them with security, shelter, food and medical services.
Today, the future of Europe and the world liberal order is being decided in Ukraine. In what kind of world we will live in the future depends on the ongoing events in Ukraine. Today, more than ever it is necessary for the international democratic community to be steadfast, stand together and take effective steps to stop the evil empire.
Today we are all Ukrainians!
